President’s Message Deborah Byrd Walker, Chuck Price, Leila Watson Rule of Law Panel ●●Other active sections and committees where younger attorneys are leading the activities and creating new opportunities for themselves. ●●An increased presence by the BBA in social media and an increased focus on making our communications and our website relevant. Respect for the Rule of Law is the bedrock for all that we do as legal professionals. The Rule of Law was the focus of the 2018 Membership Retreat in March with a panel of distinguished speakers talking about the rule of law intersecting with politics. U.S. District Judge Callie V.S. Granade described the circumstances surrounding her decision in Searcy v. Strange. Judge John Carroll described the investigation of former Chief Justice Roy Moore that the Alabama Judicial Inquiry Commission asked him to lead. Jack Sharman explained his investigation of former Governor Robert Bentley at the request of the Alabama House of Representatives Judiciary Committee. We applaud each of these honorable attorneys for their service and commitment to the law. Another important part of my term was to find, hire and help make successful a new Executive Director after the retirement of our beloved Bo Landrum. I believe we succeeded beyond our expectations. Moving forward, our Bar is fortunate to have our new Executive Director Jennifer Buettner, who began her work Morning with J. Mason Davis with us in January. Jennifer is an energetic, dynamic leader. You can be very proud of her commitment to our Bar and to each of you. Please take time to get to know her. Our Bar is in great hands with our Incoming President Charles Fry, who will no doubt improve many things in our Bar. There are so many other things going on within our Bar, making a listing here difficult. Suffice it to say we have an active Bar, with well-intentioned, honorable lawyers and judges trying to make our profession better every day. One other parting thought: Get involved and stay involved with your Bar. I hope it is as rewarding for you as it has been for me. G Birmingham Bar Bulletin/ Winter 2018 9
