Section Spotlight David Luker Secio Spoligh CRIMINAL JUSTICE SECTION Th e Criminal Justice Section of the Birmingham Bar Association was formed by the Executive Committee in November 2005 and began in January 2006. Th is over 12-year old section is now well-established and has been extremely active in 2018. Our goal is to provide educational and social opportunities for members of the BBA who practice in criminal defense, criminal prosecution or other areas within the criminal justice system. Th e Section was pleased to host a 3-hour CLE on August 29 that featured a stellar panel of attorneys discussing Lawyer Stress and Mental Health. We were grateful that the Honorable Stephen C. Wallace (Tenth Judicial Circuit, Criminal Division) joined the panel to speak about requesting a mental evaluation and other competency assessments for criminal off enders. We also welcomed Professor Pamela Pierson (Professor of Law at the Culverhouse School of Law at the University of Alabama) who discussed Stress Hardiness, concerning how to be resilient under stress. Robert Th ornhill (Director of the Alabama State Bar Lawyers Assistance Program) provided his insights on his experience in overcoming Lawyer Stress. In April, the CJS held a social at Good People Brewing and had a strong turn-out from members of our Section and others, including President Alan Rogers and Immediate Past President Leila Watson. At our well-attended October Social at Cahaba Brewing, we welcomed both members and non-members for an evening of networking and socializing, and were pleased that David Barber, former Jeff erson County District Attorney, joined the fun as well as Alan and Leila.
