Bar Foundation The Birmingham Bar Foundation Assists Disaster Relief Efforts In August and September 2017, the U.S. saw the devastating effects of hurricanes in Texas, Florida and Louisiana which left many without food, shelter, water, and electricity and in need of legal services. In response to the needs of people in those communities, the Birmingham Bar Foundation launched the Birmingham Cares Disaster Relief Fund as a means to help others. Contributions to this fund were sent to state Bar Foundations so that the funds would go directly to nonprofit organizations that offer legal assistance to hurricane victims. Donors also had the option of earmarking funds to go to local bar associations to support attorneys who live and work in areas affected by the hurthe Birmingham Bar Foundation, said. Andrea Stone, Executive Director of the Texas Bar Foundation, stated that Bar Foundations throughout the country “responded with warmth and generosity” to assist Texas hurricane victims. In Texas, 55 counties were affected by the disaster and Ms. Stone said that the “immediate support is greatly appreciated.” To date, $5,250 has been raised and that money has been sent to the Texas Bar Foundation and the Florida Bar Foundation. “We understand that there are many needs still in those areas, and we are always eager and willing to help our friends and neighbors during these difficult times in such a manner,” Nikki Tucker Thomas, Executive Director of 26 Birmingham Bar Association
