Bulletin Winter 2016

MESSAGE FROM THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR As we bring another Bar year to a close, 2016 stands out as “one for the books,” not only on the national, state and local levels, but also for the Birmingham Bar Association! Under Bob MacKenzie’s leadership, we have seen the Bar Center’s Noojin Courtyard transformed into a quiet and welcoming green-space within the City center. Plans have also been laid to renovate our CLE training rooms with fi rst-rate AV technology and an updated aesthetic. Our membership numbers will likely land among the highest in our 131-year history, especially given the evolution of our law student section. We have invested in upgraded fi re and burglar alarm systems for the building, and have upgraded our elevator, HVAC system, doors, windows and fl oors where necessary. Bob has encouraged record turnouts at Coff ees with the Judges and numerous social gatherings at the Bar Center. We have also increased our member benefi t and discount programs by leaps and bounds. With the advent of renovated CLE training rooms next year, expect to see an increase in top-quality CLE programming, along with many more networking and social gatherings in the Noojin Courtyard. Th e Bar’s Executive Committee continues to put our members fi rst, exploring ways to increase Bar relevance and value, and spending dues dollars wisely for the benefi t of the Bar’s membership. I do not expect this to change moving forward, but our 2016 Executive Committee has done an outstanding job! Th e Birmingham Bar Association is your bar association, and your thoughts and ideas are important and encouraged. Please vote in our candidate elections in early December, and join us for our 131st Annual Meeting and Holiday Party on December 9th. Best wishes for the holiday season and beyond! John W.
