Our Foundation. Preserving Justice, which documents the extraordinary role played by Birmingham’s legal community and the profound impact they had on the Civil Rights Movement. The film now serves as an educational tool and has been shared by volunteer attorneys with nearly 1,800 area high school, college and law students through school presentations. Additionally, in October, it made its statewide television premiere on Alabama Public Television. The Foundation will share the film with bar associations, civic organizations and schools throughout the nation. “The documentary is noteworthy because it had direct input from Birmingham attorneys in its development and was funded solely by Birmingham law firms and corporate sponsors. Overall, the Journey for Justice Project played a major role in the advancement of our work. Through the funds raised from the project, we will award $40,000 in grants this year. We are truly grateful to everyone who supported this endeavor,” Thomas stated. Finally, the 5th Annual Bocce Ball Tournament wrapped up this year’s charitable giving. The fun-filled night allowed the Foundation to donate the most funds ever through this event to the Legal Aid Society of Birmingham and the Birmingham Bar Volunteer Lawyers Program to support legal aid for the poor. The tournament was another collaborative effort with the Birmingham Bar Association and the BBA’s Entertainment Committee. It, too, honored past Foundation President, Mike Freeman, by naming the coveted tournament trophy the Freeman Cup. The BBA’s ADR Section now holds the title of 2013 Champs. “There are several reasons why Birmingham’s Birmingham Bar FOUNDATION legal community should be proud of our efforts not just this year, but also in years past. We are thankful to those who had the foresight to create the Foundation, and we greatly appreciate past and present board members and staff who guided the organization. I look forward to building on our previous successes, and I am excited about our future as we continue our Foundation’s work to better our community,” Thomas said.
