Women Lawyers Christina A. Graham, WLS Chair 2012-2013 Spotlight on Women Lawyers Section of Birmingham Bar Association The Women Lawyers Section (“WLS”) of the Birmingham Bar Association (“BBA”) will celebrate its twentieth anniversary in 2014. Since its inception in 1994, the WLS membership has grown to close to 400 members. The WLS exists to foster the personal and professional development of women with law degrees, and to enhance the quality of life and culture of the legal community. The purpose of the WLS is to encourage the participation of women in the practice of law as a profession, to provide role models and mentors for women seeking to enter or grow in the profession, and to provide an environment which fosters cooperation between and among women in the profession thereby enhancing the profession as a whole. The WLS has consistently proven to be one of the most active and philanthropic sections of the BBA. Each year the WLS plans a variety of programs, projects, and social events open to section members. This past year, the WLS coordinated with Momentum to sponsor a Women’s History Month Breakfast Event featuring nationally known speaker and author, Gloria Feldt. The WLS also provides continuing legal education courses and other relevant programming to its members, including relevant topics like E-Discovery and the Affordable Health Care Act. In addition to these programs, the WLS also offered leadership development programming through a partnership with The Women’s Business Council of the Birmingham Business Alliance. Throughout the year, the WLS Projects Committee coordinates the numerous service projects for the WLS. In 2013, the Projects Committee coordinated the annual Food from the Bar Food Drive (which benefits Magic City Harvest), the collection of new and gently used children’s books for Family Court, an informational program to benefit The Well House, and the coordination of the annual Santa’s Workshop Breakfast where WLS members volunteer time, donate toys and provide monetary donations for women who live in Birmingham area shelters and come to the YWCA to “shop” (no money required) for clothing, toys and other gifts for their children for Christmas. Members of the WLS executive Board also shop for CASA during the holidays. The Social and Entertainment Committee plans events and opportunities for socializing and networking among the members of the WLS. In 2013 we enjoyed a kick-off event at Jackson’s in SoHo, and the annual Summer Social event, which is an event open to WLS members as well as summer clerks. This year, the Summer Social was held at Gus Mayer and 2013 BBA Women Lawyers Section Leadership 30 Birmingham Bar Association
