Th eir presentation, titled “#StayWoke: Lessons from Birmingham, Implementing Critical Cultural Competency in Mediation Practice,” Cassandra Adams Martha Reeves Cook recognized the signifi cant racial progress which has been made throughout Alabama over the past 50 years, while also directly addressing the infl uences of Jim Crow on cultural biases. Drawing upon the experiences of their friendship and professional relationship, their presentation demonstrated how mediators can and should become aware of and competent in addressing and managing historical and contemporary issues surrounding race, gender, class, sexuality, and other identities.
