Bar Foundation The Birmingham Bar Foundation Experiences Strang Phenomenon In March, the Birmingham Bar Foundation welcomed Dean Strang, noted criminal defense attorney featured in the Netflix documentary Making A Murderer, to participate in a discussion about the criminal justice system. Done in the format of Inside the Actor’s Studio with James Lipton, Foundation board member John Lentine interviewed Mr. Strang who answered questions about the Steven Avery case featured in the Netflix documentary as well as the justice system and his professional career. “Dean was tremendously genuine. He was gracious and entertaining. He is a magnificent lawyer and a great representative of what I think a criminal defense lawyer should be,” Mr. Lentine said. The popularity of Making A Murderer as well as Mr. Strang brought more than 300 people—some in the legal profession – and many were simply immense fans of the documentary and of Mr. Strang. The event was held at the historic Lyric Theatre in downtown Birmingham and electricity filled the air before, during and after the presentation. “It was an exciting night because it was the first time that the Foundation had done a presentation such as this. It gave the average person a unique opportunity to ask questions and get responses on legal issues to give a better understanding of our justice system. I’m very proud that this event gave the Bar an opportunity to reach out to the public and bring them into a discussion about the criminal justice system in a new and different way,” Mr. Lentine added. Prior to the event, a reception was held at Wiggins Childs Pantazis Fisher & Goldfarb to welcome Mr. Strang to Birmingham. Mr. Lentine chaired the planning committee whose members included William S. “Buddy” Cox, III; Christina A. Graham; Virginia E. Miller; Chief Magistrate Judge John E. Ott, Anna C. Reilly and Vince Swiney. Proceeds of this event will benefit the Foundation as it furthers it educational programming and philanthropic efforts.
