Birmingham Bar Association Summer 2016

Special Interest Sam Rumore HISTORY DAY AT THE BBA Friday, June 17, 2016, 9:30-11:30am “The best thing we get from history is the enthusiasm it rouses.” - Goethe Taking a cue from Goethe, the famous German poet and playwright, your History and Archives Committee hopes to “rouse” your interest in the history of our Birmingham Bar Association. President Bob MacKenzie recently challenged our committee to find and share items that are meaningful to the Birmingham Bar and which illustrate our history, both recent and long passed. He noted that a committee has been formed to look into possible renovations of our Birmingham Bar Association Building, now having been our home for more than 20 years, and one suggestion has been for the display of significant items about our history that will make our building unique to us. In response, the History and Archives Committee is hosting a “History Day at the BBA” on Friday, June 17, 2016 from 9:30 to 11:30 AM. We are asking members to bring to the Bar Center any historical items that you would be willing to donate or loan for display. These items could include photographs, correspondence, manuscripts, magazine or newspaper articles, documents, artifacts, and other things that reflect the essence of the history, traditions, and personality of our association. And since so many of our members have been in practice for 25 years or less, we are soliciting more than simply “old” stuff. This could include mementos from past annual picnics, unique awards, certificates, or court orders, and many other items of interest to our members. We may even prepare a regular feature for the Birmingham Bar Association Bulletin highlighting your contributions. Our committee members will be present on June 17 to review, photograph, and catalog any potential donations. Use your imagination on what to bring. Does anyone have a Birmingham Bar Association scrapbook? Does anyone have memorabilia from past picnics, Christmas parties, or Law Day celebrations? Are there any artifacts from the Entertainment Committee or any other Committee or Section? The possible subjects for display and sharing are vast. We need to know what items exist. Our History Committee welcomes your interest and input, and we look forward to seeing you on Friday, June 17, for History Day at the BBA.
