Birmingham Bar Association Summer 2016

Special Interest courtyard, and BBA members, committees, and sections are encouraged to use the “new” Noojin Memorial Courtyard.  With prized greenspace in a rapidly expanding downtown Birmingham, the Courtyard will serve as a haven for BBA members and other groups to gather for years to come.  “I am grateful for the support from so many sections, firms and individuals for this effort, and encourage our members to take advantage of this beautiful new space,” said Mr. MacKenzie. But for the efforts of many firms, BBA sections, lawyers and judges, the renovation of the Courtyard would not have occurred. Mr. Ashford reiterated that the Courtyard’s initial tribute came about due to Ronnie Noojin’s love for his “role as an advocate and counselor for his clients.” The transformation of the Courtyard has been described by Mr. Ashford as “phenomenal”, and he categorized the Courtyard as “the focal point” of the Bar Center. Peter Falkner, whose business transformed the Courtyard, documented the progress of the renovation through his Falkner Gardens’ Instagram feed, noting that Ronnie Noojin was “loved and admired by many.” Through the efforts of these individuals and others, and through the Bar’s use of the newly renovated Courtyard, Mr. Noojin’s beloved legacy and love for lawyers will continue. For those of us who did not have the pleasure of working with or knowing Mr. Noojin, his accomplishments and the respect of his peers outlive his death. Mr. Noojin’s dear friend and partner, Leon Ashford, had this to say: “Ronnie Noojin was a loving spouse and father, a dear friend to all who knew him, and a lawyer who truly loved his role as an advocate and counselor for his clients.” Mr. Ashford and Mr. Noojin were partners for 18 years before Mr. Noojin, sadly, lost his battle with cancer twenty years ago next month. Mr. Ashford added that “Ronnie was loved and admired during his lifetime, and this is a most fitting tribute to our dear friend.” Please mark your calendars for a “re-dedication” reception on the late afternoon of Wednesday, June 29th.  Details are available on the Bar’s website at www.birminghambar.org, and we hope to see you there! G Hannah C. Thompson is an attorney at White Arnold & Dowd P.C., practicing in the areas of white collar criminal defense, civil & complex litigation, and financial services litigation.
