Justice Terry L. Butts on the Alabama Supreme Court and was admitted to the Alabama bar. Since then, Judge England has practiced in both civil and criminal law, in state and federal courts, at both the trial and appellate levels. Prior to coming to the bench, Judge England served for three years as First Assistant United States Attorney for the Northern District of Alabama. In this position, Judge England served as Acting United States Attorney when the United States Attorney was out of the district, and oversaw the Criminal, Civil, Appellate, and Administrative divisions of the United States Attorney’s Offi ce. Prior to becoming First Assistant, Judge England litigated cases in all sections of the Criminal Division of the United States Attorney’s Offi ce. Prior to joining the United States Attorney’s offi ce, Judge England was an attorney with Watson McKinney, LLP in Huntsville where his practice primarily involved personal injury, class actions, and labor and employment litigation. Judge England’s passion and dedication to the law are no doubt a result of WE’VE SPENT THE PAST 50 YEARS PLANNING FOR RETIREMENT. WHEN DID YOU START PLANNING? Special Interest his upbringing. Judge England is from a family of lawyers devoted to public service. Judge England’s father, who refers to himself as “the real Judge England,” was one of the fi rst African-American graduates of the University of Alabama’s Law School. He currently serves as a judge on the Tuscaloosa County Circuit Court and was previously a justice on the Alabama Supreme Court. Judge England’s sister is a civil rights attorney with the Department of Education. Judge England’s brother is an Assistant City Attorney with the City of Tuscaloosa and a member of the Alabama House of Representatives. Judge England also served in the Alabama National Guard and Army Reserve. When not working, Judge England spends time with his wife and daughter.
