Although her mother didn’t have a career outside the home, she fought hard for what she believed in, including her daughters. LAadwviycee f o:r Young “It’s so important to fi nd your own style and speak with your own voice,” she said. She recalled teaching at Cumberland School of Law and worrying about some of her more soft-spoken students, but ultimately noting that they often became the most persuasive because they had to work hardest to fi nd their own voice. “One of the worst mistakes I see young lawyers make is imitating older lawyers they admire in styles that are not their own. You can’t speak with authenticity that way. And it’s rare to fi nd people who are natural-born actors right off the bat. She also plans to spend more time with her family and friends. For example, while I was talking with her, one of her former law clerks, Birmingham attorney Amanda Cobb, dropped by and made plans with her to catch up. “Now she has a strong sense of who she is,” noted Judge Privett. She spoke with admiration of the work done by her longest-serving clerk, Gail Andrews -- “I knew a good thing there when I saw it.” “I’ve been so privileged to have this position. I love the lawyers who’ve appeared before me (or at least most of them). I’m simply leaving the position because I’m excited about the next stage in my life and ready to begin. You can’t get stuck in life.
