He gave me one more eloquent quote about criticism written by Elvis Presley, which includes the reminder that, “Long, long after a great work or a good work has been done, those who are disappointed or envious continue to cry out that it cannot be done.” On Family: Judge King comes from a family of lawyers and judges who, in spite of their contentious profession, have displayed impressive loyalty. At Judge King’s retirement reception, his brother, Probate Judge Alan King, spoke with touching pride about his brother’s career. Where some families struggle with rivalry and envy, Judge Alan King spoke proudly about his brother’s work ethic and career as a judge, and thanked him for his help. To this day, they call each other “Bud.” When Judge Tom King, Jr., spoke, he said how proud he was of his family – which for him included his wife, siblings, children, nieces, nephews, and those who came before him - but also his assistant Pam, and his former law clerks (many of whom flocked to the reception). He told his son, who works in economic development rather than law, how proud he was of him for carrying on the family tradition of serving Alabama. On Friendship: The judges at Judge King’s ceremony spoke fondly of him – including Judge Special Interest Blankenship exhibiting his best Judge Tom King, Jr., impression, Judge Lee reading a poem she had written for him to inspire him to relax in his retirement, and Judge Smitherman thanking him warmly for his advice to her when she became a judge. At the end of Judge King’s remarks, he thanked his longtime assistant, Pam, for her many years of service, and indicated in typically modest fashion that she was deserving of applause, as opposed to him. Everyone wished Judge King well in his first act of retirement – going to the beach with his wife. No More Bull!
