Birmingham Bar Volunteer Lawyers Program Pro Bono Answering the Call to Service Birmingham law fi rms step-up to support the Volunteer Lawyers Program Th e Birmingham Bar has again demonstrated its commitment to making justice accessible for all citizens. Twenty-two Birmingham law fi rms and corporations recently agreed to fi nancially support the Birmingham Bar Volunteer Lawyers Program (BBVLP) with a threeyear capital campaign commitment. “Th e Birmingham legal community has always had a strong sense of the importance of helping those less fortunate than themselves,” said Samuel Franklin, the BBVLP board member who is the chair of the capital campaign and a founding partner of Lightfoot, Franklin & White LLC. “I was not surprised that these fi rms wanted to support the Volunteer Lawyers Program, but I was grateful that many stepped up and agreed to leadership giving levels over a three-year period.” Th e Volunteer Lawyers Program is a 501(c)(3) and relies on donations and grants from the Alabama Law Foundation, Legal Services of Alabama, the Alabama Civil Justice Foundation and others to be able to serve nearly 1,500 fi nancially-eligible clients a year. Th e program matches volunteer lawyers with clients unable to aff ord attorneys and operates three Help Desks weekly in District and Domestic Courts for self-represented litigants.
