Birmingham Bar Association Bulletin Fall 2018

President’s Message Alan T. Rogers FROM THE PRESIDENT I hope you had a fantastic summer and are looking forward to cooler weather, football season, and lots of opportunities for getting together this Fall. Let’s recap the summer and recognize some of our members before I preview what’s on tap for autumn. Our traditional kick-off of the summer is the Annual Bar Picnic, and this year’s event was a huge success. We have Nick Callahan and everyone on the Entertainment Committee to thank for another great day of food and fun. Go ahead and mark your calendar for next year’s Picnic – the second Friday of June. The Bar rounded out the summer with a Food Truck Summer Social, featuring dinner from a local food truck, live music and fellowship among our members. Our sections have also been extremely active this summer, bringing you both educational and social events. The Young Lawyers Section – under the excellent leadership of Rebecca Beers – held is annual golf tournament to start its summer season. The fact that they could only play 3 rounds before the rain set in simply Alan Rogers, Judge Harris Johnson, Judge Brown meant an early start to happy hour! Rebecca and her Section also triumphed with a huge turn-out at its annual BBQ with the Bench. Congratulations to Judge Sharon L. Blackburn (pictured here with Rebecca), who received the Drayton James Award, given annually by the Young Lawyers Section. The Women Lawyers Section enjoyed record attendance at its “Paths to Leadership” CLE followed by a reception. Section Chair, Kim Geisler, has done a tremendous job of engaging Section members in outstanding programs and social events. The Solo and Small Firm Section is also extremely active, with luncheon CLEs every month and social events such as their competitive and fun Picnic and Cornhole Tournament. Under Cedrick Coleman’s leadership this year, the Section has grown and it provides a number of exceptional benefits for its members. Bankruptcy/Commercial Law Section Chair, James Bailey, is an active and engaged leader who has helped this section achieve great things in 2018. The section hosted its half-day CLE in August, which was a big success. More information about the section was shared in James’ article in the Spring Bulletin. The Probate Section hosted its Christmas in July event for the judges and staff of the Probate Court, as well as a night at the Barons game for section members. You can read about other activities this very active section has been engaged in in Chair Jennifer Griffin’s article in this issue of the Bulletin. I also want to recognize Maridi Huggins and Shannon Dye, who are Chair and Co-Chair of this year’s Future Leaders Forum. The FLF is the Bar’s leadership program for attorneys who are three to eight years into their practices. As you can see from the photo included here, the 2018 class is a great group of future Bar leaders. Another professional development program offered by the Bar is the Mentoring Program chaired by Pooja Chawla and co-chaired by Tom Walker. Pictured here, these terrific leaders are ensuring a good experience for their class of 20 8 Birmingham Bar Association
