Birmingham Bar Association - Bulletin Fall 2017

MESSAGE FROM THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR With mixed feelings, I am using my message in this issue to update you on some important developments for both the BBA, and for me personally. As some of you know, I was diagnosed with a form of lung cancer in mid-summer. As you read this, I expect to be undergoing chemotherapy and/or radiation in New England with the input and consultation of the Dana Farber Cancer Institute in Boston. Th e details at this point are optimistic and encouraging, and I have a solid chance to get beyond this serious challenge. Given this news, however, I have elected to step down from the BBA at the end of this year. While this is not an easy decision for me, it is the right decision for the organization and a wonderful opportunity to move the BBA forward and ahead on so many levels. And as I explained to your Executive Board, if I am lucky enough to enjoy a cure or even a remission, I will likely not be in Birmingham but on a beach somewhere instead :) Your Executive Board and Committee have been in the loop as this has evolved, and they are on top of the search eff ort to identify the next Executive Director. Given that we have time to secure the right person, and given the many special qualities that are characteristic of the BBA, I am convinced that this will be a great opportunity for the Bar! In the meantime, I am in regular contact with Dana, Alyssa, and your leadership, and commit to ensuring a smooth transition in the months ahead. I hope to report back to you in the December Bar Bulletin with good news on many fronts! Best to all of you, and enjoy the Fall! John W.
