BBA Mentoring Program to a conflict at work, so we made up for it by arranging our first meeting at Carrigan’s on 1st Ave. From our first hello it was more like we were like long lost friends than strangers, or even a mentor and her mentee. We instantly discovered we had a great deal in common—each of us was an only child, so we almost felt like long-lost siblings. (For all of you only-children out there reading this, I know you understand the importance of that factor.) I kept thinking that Pooja Chawla, the chair of the mentoring program, was a miracle worker. Pooja couldn’t have picked two people with more in common. As we continued to talk over our meal, Brock asked me a lot of well thought out questions about my experience starting out in the field of law. The evening turned out to be a wonderful opportunity to connect and reflect on my journey since law school. Since our initial meeting, Brock and I have met for dinner or libations as our schedules allow in order to catch up with one another, share stories, and laugh. As I have come to know her over these past few months, I have come to admire her as an attorney due to her commitment, dedication and enthusiasm for her job. Brock, who graduated from the University of Alabama School of Law in 2015, was a staff attorney for the Honorable Charles R. Malone with the Tuscaloosa County Circuit before her recent move to Birmingham to work as an attorney with the Jefferson County Public Defender’s Office. This past May Brock attended the Shores-Vance Inn of Court Meeting at the Hugo Black Federal Courthouse, and at one of our meet-ups she recounted for me Mark White’s outstanding presentation at that meeting which called for the need of true professionalism in the law. It is those standards of ethics and excellence that Steve imparted to me, and that I hope will continue to be passed along to future mentees of the BBA mentoring program. I am thrilled to have been able to be a mentor this year with the program. It has not only been a gift worth giving but a gift worth receiving. Brock and I would both recommend to any member of the bar to be a part of this program whether as a mentor or mentee. And by the way, I get it now, Steve.” G Fastest smartest malpractice insurance.
