Birmingham Bar Association Bulletin Fall 2016

President’s Message Courtyard is available for all to use. You will also note another improvement to the building. We now have the flags of the United States, the State of Alabama, and the Birmingham Bar mounted on the front of our building. The reality is that other than the courthouses, there is no other building in downtown Birmingham where more important work is being performed. Our building should reflect that mission. Given the positive response to the Courtyard, we will now look at the next phase of improvement. To assure we make wise decisions, we have retained an architect to provide guidance. I am hopeful that by mid-fall, we will be able to announce the second phase. In the meantime, please share any ideas you have about the best way to use our facility. In addition to the improvements of and organize historical items of interest to the Bar. We hope that these items will be placed on permanent display for all to enjoy. Attention has been given to the younger members of our Bar with the start of this year’s Future Leaders Forum. Andrew Salser and Ashley Peinhardt have selected a solid class. The Mentoring Committee, chaired by Pooja Chawla, has likewise organized a group of young and older lawyers to provide good guidance to lawyers just entering the practice. Under the leadership of John Bodie, the Family Law Committee has created a listserv for its members. The Committee members will be organized to assist the Volunteer Lawyer Help Desk. As the school year begins, the Public Service Committee, chaired by Jequette Edmondson and Susan Silvernail, has again been instrumental in a successful Back to School supplies drive to provide books and supplies to lothe building, our Sections and Committees have been very active and there are many highlights. Under the leadership of Nikki Thomas and Debbie Smith, the Bar Foundation raised over $50,000 at the Rock The Bar event in June. The money will be put to good use as part of the Foundations’ outreach program. The Bar Picnic was also again a huge success. Thanks to Nick Callahan and all of the Entertainment Committee members for another great day of food and fun. The Young Lawyers held their annual BBQ with the Judges. It was well attended, and many thanks go to D. G. Pantazis and Jay Wright for their leadership. Congratulations to Judge Bobby Bynon, who received the Drayton James Award, given annually by the Young Lawyers. The History and Archives Committee led by Bill Mills and Sam Rumore held a “BBA History Day.” That Committee is continuing to collect Birmingham Bar Bulletin/ Fall 2016 9
